Brahma Vaivarta Purana – Shri Krishna Janma Khanda: The Eternal Leelas of Lord Krishna

Introduction to Krishna Janma Khanda

The Shri Krishna Janma Khanda is the fourth and most important section of the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, dedicated to the divine birth, nature, and leelas (pastimes) of Lord Krishna.

Unlike other Puranas that focus only on Krishna's earthly pastimes, this Khanda describes Krishna as the Supreme Godhead, who descends from Goloka, his eternal abode, for the welfare of the world. It places Radha not just as a companion, but as the Adi Shakti, the source of creation, and Krishna’s eternal consort beyond material time and space.

Key Themes:
Spiritual Birth: Krishna is not born like humans but manifests through divine will.
Radha's Supremacy: Radha is portrayed as the primordial goddess, even superior to Lakshmi and Saraswati.
Divine Play (Leela): Childhood acts like stealing butter, dancing with Gopis, and killing demons carry deep spiritual symbolism.
Philosophy of Love (Bhakti): Devotion to Krishna and Radha is described as the highest spiritual path.
Moksha Through Bhakti: The Khanda emphasizes that loving devotion alone can liberate the soul.

This section is a masterpiece of Bhakti literature, especially revered by devotees of Radha-Krishna, and is often recited during Janmashtami or in Krishna temples.

4. Shri Krishna Janm Khand

Shri Krishna Janm Khand of the Brahmvaivart Puran is more elaborate than the other three sections. Comprising 101 chapters, there is detailed description of the histrionics related with Lord Shri Krishna. Though there is detailed description of the character of Lord Shri Krishna in the Shrimad Bhagwat, yet some special incidents related with him are cited in this khand which has found insignificant or negligible mention even in the Shrimad Bhagwat Puran.

This khand begins with the description of Golok. Thereafter the entire story from Shri Krishna's incarnation to taking him to Gokul by Vasudev has been described in sequence. The detail of the previous birth of Nand and Yashoda are made in this context in which Nand was a Vasu named Drona and Yashoda was her wife named Dhara. After that a beautiful childhood-histrionics of Shri Krishna from his birth onwards at Gokul has been made.

There is description of Shri Krishna armour (kavach) in the 12th chapter which destroys physical, spiritual, and material fear completely. Man becomes free from all kinds of fear by framing this beneficial armour in a gold yantra and wearing it on the neck or arm. Lord Shri Krishna bestows kindness upon him.

In the 13th chapter, there is the episode of the nomenclature of Lord Shri Krishna and Balram by Garg muni, the family guru of Yaduvanshi. List pertaining to 33 names of Lord Shri Krishna and 9 names of Balramji has been given in it. A detail of sixteen names of Radhaji has been given to Devarshi Narad by Lord Narayan in the 17th chapter. The lists of the names of Lord Shri Krishna, Balramji, and Radha follow as under:
