Ayurvedic Remedies for Goitre
What is Goitre?
Goitre is the abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, located at the front of the neck. This swelling can be caused by iodine deficiency, hormonal imbalances, or autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Graves’ disease. Symptoms may include a visible neck swelling, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, and in some cases, metabolic disturbances.
Ayurvedic View on Goitre (Galaganda)
In Ayurveda, goitre is known as Galaganda, which is primarily caused by the imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas. This imbalance leads to obstruction in the channels (srotas) and accumulation of toxins (ama) around the throat. Galaganda is classified under neck-related disorders and is mentioned in ancient Ayurvedic texts like Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita.
Effective Ayurvedic Herbs for Goitre
Several herbs are used traditionally in Ayurveda to manage goitre and support healthy thyroid function:
Kanchanar (Bauhinia variegata): A powerful herb for reducing glandular swelling and dissolving abnormal growths.
Triphala: A blend of three fruits that helps eliminate toxins and regulate digestion.
Guggulu (Commiphora mukul): Often used with Kanchanar in the form of Kanchanar Guggulu, known for its detoxifying and anti-inflammatory effects.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): Balances thyroid hormones and reduces stress-related thyroid issues.
Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa): Reduces fluid retention and swelling in the body.
Dietary and Lifestyle Tips in Ayurveda
Ayurveda emphasizes a balanced diet and lifestyle to correct dosha imbalance and support thyroid health:
Consume iodine-rich natural foods like seaweed, dairy, and Himalayan salt if iodine deficiency is the cause.
Avoid processed foods, refined sugar, and fried items that increase Kapha and ama.
Drink warm water throughout the day to improve digestion and reduce kapha accumulation.
Perform neck exercises and Pranayama (breathing exercises) like Anulom-Vilom to improve circulation and energy flow.
Regular oil massage (Abhyanga) with medicated oils like Ksheerabala or Mahamasha tailam can relieve stiffness and swelling.
Panchakarma and Other Therapies
For chronic or stubborn goitre, Panchakarma therapies such as:
Virechana (therapeutic purgation) to detox the liver and improve hormonal balance.
Nasya (nasal medication) to remove toxins from the head and neck region.
Lepa (herbal paste application) on the swelling to reduce the size of the goitre.
These therapies should be done under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.
