Narsimha Jayanti – Birth Anniversary of Lord Narasimha

Nrisimha Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the appearance of Lord Narasimha, the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who manifested in a half-man, half-lion form to protect His devotee Prahlada and destroy the demon king Hiranyakashipu. It is observed on the 14th day (Chaturdashi) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakha. Devotees observe fasts, perform puja, and chant mantras to invoke blessings, protection, and removal of obstacles.

Story of Nrisimha Jayanti

According to the Puranas, Hiranyakashipu, blessed with a boon that he could not be killed by man or beast, inside or outside, during day or night, grew arrogant and declared himself God. His son Prahlada remained a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. Enraged, Hiranyakashipu tried to kill him several times but failed. Ultimately, Lord Vishnu emerged from a pillar in the form of Narasimha, neither man nor animal, and killed Hiranyakashipu at twilight on the threshold of the palace—fulfilling the boon’s conditions while protecting His devotee.

Nrisimha Bhagwan (Man-lion Incarnation) is believed to be the fourth Incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He emerged in the mortal world on the fourteenth day of the bright half of Vaishakh. He did so to redeem the world and his devotees from the iniquitous rule of the demon king Hiranyakashyapu, who like his brother Hiranyaksha had received a boon of immortality from Brahma. Hiranyakashyapu forbade prayer and worship to Lord Hari (Vishnu) and instituted worship and prayer unto himself.

He was very much annoyed to discover his own son Prahlad behaving as an ardent devote of Vishnu. He tortured and tormented Prahlad to change his mind, but child Prahlad remained unmoved in his devotion to Lord Almighty Vishnu Bhagwan, Hiranyakashyapu then resorted to killing his own son by making attempts of having the lad Prahlad, trampled under the elephants; throwing the boy down the precipices and by such other means but without any success. Since the boon received by him from Brahma made him immune to be killed in and out of any house, in day or night, by man or beast, he stayed unscathed in his torturous rule.

One day Hiranyakashyapu was so enraged that he rushed to kill Prahlad with his own sword, asking the child where was his Saviour ?

Instantly Vishnu stepped out of a nearby pillar in the form of Nrisimha, half lion and half man. That was neither the day time nor night (being dusk), and they were neither inside the house nor out of it (being in the verandah sort of the enclosure) Lord Vishnu - honouring the conditions of the boon - in Man-Lion Form tore the wicked Hiranyakashyapu in two pieces.

People keep fast on this auspicious day falling generally around the end of April or gebinning of May, meditate on Lord Nrisimha and seek his grace to have the devotion like that of Prahlad. In charity the devotees give cows, grains, gold, robes etc., to the poor and the learned Brahmins according to their capacity. Nrisimha symbolizes Omni presence of God and His deep concern and love for the devotees as also victory of good over evil.
