Oedema and Its Ayurvedic Remedies
Oedema is a condition in which excess fluid accumulates in body tissues, causing swelling—commonly in the feet, legs, hands, or face. It may be caused by injury, chronic diseases, kidney or heart disorders, pregnancy, or prolonged sitting and standing. According to Ayurveda, oedema is known as Shotha or Sotha, and it is primarily due to an imbalance in Kapha dosha, blockage of bodily channels (Srotas), and impaired fluid metabolism. Ayurvedic remedies help reduce swelling by improving circulation, flushing out excess fluid, and balancing doshas naturally.
Causes of Oedema
Fluid retention due to heart, liver, or kidney dysfunction
Poor circulation and lymphatic blockage
Injury or inflammation
Pregnancy
Excess salt intake or lack of exercise
Side-effects of certain medications
In Ayurveda, aggravation of Kapha and Vata dosha leads to obstruction of fluid channels, resulting in water retention in specific body parts.
Symptoms of Oedema
Visible swelling or puffiness in limbs or face
Tight or shiny skin
Feeling of heaviness and stiffness
Pitting on pressure (skin indentation remains when pressed)
Reduced mobility and discomfort
Ayurvedic Remedies for Oedema
1. Herbal Treatments
Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa): The best-known diuretic herb in Ayurveda that reduces water retention and swelling.
Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris): Improves kidney function and balances fluid.
Trikatu (Ginger, Piper longum & Black pepper): Enhances circulation and reduces Kapha accumulation.
Dashmool: Anti-inflammatory and reduces oedematous swelling due to injuries.
2. Panchakarma Therapies
Virechana (Purgation): Removes excess water and toxins, especially in abdominal oedema.
Basti (Medicated Enema): Used for chronic oedema related to Vata-Kapha imbalance.
Abhyanga with Pinda Sweda (Massage with herbal bolus): Improves lymphatic drainage.
Dietary Recommendations
Take a light Kapha-reducing diet with barley, horse gram, moong dal, bottle gourd, ginger, and garlic.
Avoid salty, sour, oily, and heavy foods such as pickles, fried snacks, curd, cheese, and red meat.
Drink lukewarm water mixed with a pinch of dry ginger or coriander seeds.
Reduce salt intake and avoid cold drinks.
