Prickly Heat – Causes, Symptoms, and Ayurvedic Remedies


Prickly heat, also known as heat rash or miliaria, is a common skin condition caused by excessive sweating and blocked sweat glands. It often occurs in hot and humid climates and is particularly common during summer months. The condition is characterized by small, red, itchy bumps on the skin, which can cause discomfort and irritation. Ayurveda provides natural and effective remedies to treat prickly heat while balancing the body’s Pitta and Kapha doshas.

PRICKLY HEAT: It is an acute form of heat rash associated with excessive sweating, specially during humid climate. In Ayurveda this is known as a type of pidaka.

It consists of small superficial eruptions which look like grains of sand. It affects almost any part of the body. Pricking, burning sensation and itching cause a lot of discomfort, and may cause secondary bacterial infection.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Prickly heat: Persons having paittika type of physical constitution are more prone to get this skin trouble. As far as possible, such patients should avoid heat and humidity. Intake of Pravala pishti in a dose of 0.5 gms, twice a day, with honey, helps both in preventing and curing this disease.

Diet to taken by prickly heat patients: Almond and almond oil, grapes, specially dry grapes, are very useful for these patients. Fruit juice should be given to them in plenty.

Other regimens: Use of fresh air and physical exercise helps both in preventing and curing this condition. Care should be taken to see that the sweat is wiped off the body as soon as it appears.

Excessive sweating due to hot and humid weather
Wearing tight or non-breathable clothing that traps sweat
Obstruction of sweat glands, leading to irritation
Poor hygiene or prolonged exposure to heat
Weak digestive fire (Agni) and toxin accumulation in the body

Symptoms of Prickly Heat

Small red or pink bumps on the skin
Itching and prickling sensation
Mild burning or discomfort
Often appears on the neck, chest, back, and folds of the skin
In severe cases, blisters filled with fluid may form

Ayurvedic Remedies for Prickly Heat

1. Aloe Vera Gel
Apply fresh aloe vera gel on affected areas to cool the skin and reduce inflammation.
Aloe vera helps soothe irritation and promotes healing of rashes.
2. Sandalwood Paste
Mix sandalwood powder with rose water to create a paste.
Apply to prickly heat areas to cool the skin, reduce redness, and relieve itching.
3. Neem Leaves
Make a paste of fresh neem leaves and apply to the skin.
Neem has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, preventing infections and calming irritation.
4. Cooling Herbal Bath
Add chamomile, mint, or coriander leaves to bathwater.
A herbal bath helps cool the body, reduce sweating, and relieve itching.
5. Dietary Adjustments
Consume cooling foods such as cucumber, watermelon, and coconut water.
Avoid spicy, oily, and fried foods that aggravate Pitta dosha.
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and flush out toxins.
6. Loose Cotton Clothing
Wear loose, breathable cotton garments to reduce sweating and friction.
Avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat and moisture.
