Radha Ashtami – Significance, Fasting, and Rituals


Radha Ashtami is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Goddess Radha, the divine consort of Lord Krishna. Observed on the Ashtami (eighth day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada (August-September), this day holds immense spiritual significance, especially for devotees of Radha-Krishna. It is believed that worshipping Goddess Radha on this day brings devotion, love, spiritual growth, and harmony in relationships.

The eighth day of the moon is always Shakti’s own day and so is the ninth. Radha Ashtami is celebrated on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Bhadra (August- September). On this day Radha was born. She is considered to be the incarnation of Lakshmi and worshipped accordingly. Radha, the favourite mistress and consort of Krishna during his days of youth in Vrindavan, in also a symbol of human soul drawn to the ineffable God Krishna, or the symbol of pure divine love as compared to fickle love.

On this day after early morning ablutions, the image of Radha is bathed in panchamrit and then richly adorned and ornamented before offering food and worship. Fast is kept on this day and Prasad distributed.
